“Listen, we went through all the titles you could imagine. And there was something just so simple and clean, and nice about Scream VI."

— CriticalOverlord (@CriticalOverlo3) February 16, 2023The contentious alterations made to the film's renowned horror antagonist Ghostface have prompted a response from Scream 6 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. After their final encounter with the mask-wearing killer, the Carpenter sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) are expected to move to New York City in Scream 6. The franchise's most recent big-city adventure was first teased in a new video released earlier this year, but one Ghostface moment would later cause a lot of controversies.
The Scream 6 directing team defended their decision to feature a gun-toting Ghostface in an interview with SFX Magazine (via Digital Spy) in response to claims that this decision damaged the character. Bettinelli-Olpin said the couple "don't want it to be safe" and that the scene is a prime illustration of their ambition to make the movie "fun and [able] to raise eyebrows.
How Ghostface Differs From His Forerunners in Scream 6
Considering the negative feedback it has received online, it is unlikely that Ghostface from Scream 6 will continue to carry a shotgun for very long. The firearm merely seems to be a weapon of convenience, as some astute viewers have already noted. Ghostface would have snatched the shotgun in its place just as readily if the original owner had brandished any other weapon in the trailer. Nonetheless, Ghostface's Scream 6 update still seems poised to defy numerous conventions set out by others who came before him.
Yet, Ghostface's targeted victims in Scream 6 may be the most notable change. Neve Campbell, the original series lead, withdrew from the production owing to a highly publicized financial disagreement, making this year's installment the first since 1996 in which a knife-wielding Ghostface will not confront the ever-resilient, Sidney Prescott. When Scream 6 hits cinemas on March 10, viewers will be able to judge for themselves whether this works out in his favor.
