This weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water's record-breaking domestic box office performance might see its lowest point ever.

This weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water is anticipated to decelerate to its current lowest position on the domestic movie office chart. The late James Cameron sequel debuted on December 16, 2022, and it remained at the top of the domestic chart every weekend until Knock at the Cabin and 80 for Brady delivered a one-two punch that dropped it to No. 3 in early February. After that, it climbed back to No. 2, keeping afloat in front of Magic Mike's Final Dance and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the top two films of the following weekends, as the competition was too weak.

Deadline reports that based on Thursday previews, the blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water might drop as far as No. 4 by the conclusion of the weekend. It barely made $500,000 yesterday, trailing Jesus Revolution ($3 million) and Cocaine Bear ($2 million). By the end of the weekend, it's uncertain whether the two movies will switch places, but it appears Ant-Man will take the top spot, pushing Avatar 2 down to No. 4, its lowest position since its release.

When Will The Way of the Water: Avatar Leave the Top 5?

Avatar: The Way of Water has more than demonstrated its ability to fight to preserve a spot in the domestic box office, despite possibly taking a significant knock this weekend. The Oscar-nominated Avatar sequel may reclaim a spot in the Top 3 the following weekend. Although Ant-Man will probably stop it from ever reaching No. 1, it might stay in the Top 5 for a good deal longer.

How many of the future theatrical releases will have the kind of staying power to occupy the top slots of the list for more than one weekend will determine how long Avatar 2 stays in the Top 5.

While a number of upcoming movies are anticipated to have excellent opening weekends, it will take more than that for them to unseat Avatar as the number of viewers for both Jesus Revolution and the trending Cocaine Bear is expected to decline after one week. Avatar won't likely drop to No. 6 or below until at least the end of March.

With five big movies debuting every weekend in March, this may give Avatar: The Way of Water the momentum it needs to be defeated once and for all. The franchise tentpoles Creed III, Scream 6 and Shazam! will flood theaters before the end of the month. John Wick's Wrath of the Gods, Chapter 4, as well as D&D: Honor Among Thieves. Together, these movies may prove to be a significant box office tsunami strong enough to compete with Cameron, even though they might not have the potential to do so separately.
