Ukraine Launches Incursion into Russia"
In early August, Ukrainian forces launched a surprise cross-border attack, advancing up to 18 miles (30 km) into Russia's Kursk region.
Nearly 200,000 residents were evacuated from border areas by the Russian government, with President Vladimir Putin denouncing the Ukrainian offensive as a "major provocation."
After a week of fighting, Ukraine's top commander claimed control of 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory. However, analysts believe the actual area may be smaller. Both the Kursk and Belgorod regions have declared states of emergency.
